About Wagatwe Wanjuki

hi! I'm Wagatwe Wanjuki, an award-winning anti-rape activist and feminist theorist. I'm a freelance writer and public speaker on topics including feminism, sexual assault, social media activism, and survivor empowerment. I use the Internet to spark conversations educate and agitate people into becoming better bystanders through education with an intersectional, trauma-sensitive lens. Learn more about me on my website.

What I do

I’ve done many different types of antirape work over the years. Some highlights from the past decade include:

Successfully campaigning the Obama adminsitration to improve Title IX enforcement.
As a founding co-organizer of the ED ACT NOW campaign urging the Department of Education to improve Title IX enforcement, I served as a spokesperson, created the digital strategy that lead to petition with over 180,000 signatures, advised officials on changes that lead to #NotAlone and Dear Colleague Letters.

Academic influence: my work has inspired much-needed research into campus sexual assault's impact on women of color that didn't exist when I was assaulted. I regularly speak at universities and conferences about sexual assault, feminism, and digital activism. Past engagements include the National Sexual Assault Conference, Yale University, Rutgers University, and NY Social Media Week.

I provide commentary to media to outlets like The Guardian, Vox, and more. And I write for outlets including the New York Times, ESSENCE, Bitch Media, Cosmopolitan, Teen Vogue.

Why Patreon?

The internet has been incredible and we’re in unprecedented times in the movements to end rape. Survivors are speaking up more than ever but it’s still hard to find trustworthy, accurate content that will make us better antirape advocates in our daily lives. Your support allows me to focus on creating the kind of content we need.

Sexual assault is one of the most serious human rights and public health crises in society, but it's barely invested in. Anti-domestic and sexual violence organizations are chronically underfunded, organizations for women and girls receive only 1.3% overall charitable giving from individuals, foundations, and corporations in 2016, and only 0.6% of foundation giving was targeted to women of color.

Your subscription allows me to work independently, avoid chasing grants, and remain free of political influence that often comes with receiving nonprofit funding. This means better content—and more of it.

What you get

Join me and others dedicated to learning more about rape prevention and empowering the survivors through a feminist, antirape lens. You can get Patreon-exclusive content, sneak peeks at what I'm writing and reading, voting rights, and more with the confidence that you're directly supporting a survivor with one ultimate goal: creating a rape-free world.

Topics include: rape culture, politics, trauma, feminist theory, domestic violence, rape prevention. All the work will help create better media that creates better conversations that’ll bring us closer to a rape-free world.

Thanks for joining me on this long, hard journey. In solidarity,
