About Zora's Daughters
We prioritize the brilliance of Black women.
Zora’s Daughters is a society and culture podcast that uses Black feminist anthropology to think about race, politics, and popular culture. We are two Black women anthropologists who follow in the legacy of Zora Neale Hurston and other Black women ethnographers. Our mission is to break down theoretical concepts and dig deeper into current events to show that anyone - regardless of education level - can listen to us, connect theory and the everyday, learn something new, or reflect on their own experiences.
We take seriously the Combahee River Collective’s declaration that “If Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression.” We believe that when Black women win, we all do!
What will you do with the money?
Patreon funds will be used for ongoing production costs for the podcast. We are proud to say that we pay other Black people for their labor, including designers, music producers, transcriptionists, and interns. Accessibility is integral to our work, so we have transcriptions for every episode and would like to hire ASL interpreters for events. Additionally, we pay all of our guests for their time. We have also used funds for the purchase of school supplies for Black and low-income teachers and students.
As we grow, we plan to organize events and host conversations, writing retreats, and other programming that will continue to empower people to develop the tools and language that starts conversations and sparks change.
Thank you for supporting our vision.
In solidarity,
Alyssa & Brendane
